Located at 753 Ruby St, Joliet, IL 60435, this delightful diner offers a unique dining experience that’s a step above the rest. Whether you're a local or just passing through, you’ll find something to love here.

One of the first things that stands out at Magpies Joy of Eating is its inviting ambiance. From the moment you walk in, the cozy setting makes you feel right at home. The décor is simple yet stylish, with an emphasis on warmth and comfort. The staff, friendly and attentive, go out of their way to ensure that every guest feels welcomed. They take pride in making sure your dining experience is both pleasant and memorable.

The menu is another reason why this spot has gained such a loyal following. With a variety of options ranging from classic American comfort foods to inventive dishes, there’s something for everyone. For breakfast lovers, the pancakes are a must-try-fluffy, perfectly golden, and served with a generous helping of syrup. Pair them with a hot cup of coffee, and you’ve got a breakfast worth waking up for. If you’re in the mood for something heartier, the biscuits and gravy are rich, creamy, and incredibly satisfying.

Lunch and dinner menus at Magpies offer a great selection of sandwiches, burgers, and salads, with some unique twists that keep regulars coming back for more. The Magpie burger, a crowd favorite, comes piled high with toppings, and the patty is cooked to juicy perfection. It's served with a side of crispy fries that are just the right amount of crunchy. For those looking for something lighter, the salads are fresh, full of flavor, and dressed to perfection.

One of the standout features of Magpies Joy of Eating is their dedication to using high-quality ingredients. Whether it's the locally sourced vegetables, the freshly baked bread, or the hand-cut fries, everything on the menu tastes fresh. It’s clear that they prioritize quality over quantity, and that makes all the difference in the dining experience.

Aside from the food, the service at Magpies is top-notch. The waitstaff is always friendly, knowledgeable, and ready to make recommendations. On a recent visit, we had the pleasure of being served by Sarah, who was incredibly helpful and ensured our meal was just right. She recommended the fried chicken, which, by the way, was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside-truly one of the best I’ve had in Joliet.

When it comes to dessert, don’t skip the homemade pies. They offer a selection of seasonal flavors, and each one is a slice of heaven. The apple pie, for instance, is a classic comfort dessert, packed with sweet, cinnamon-spiced apples and encased in a buttery, flaky crust. It’s the perfect way to end your meal, especially when paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

What makes Magpies Joy of Eating even more special is its community involvement. The restaurant is known for supporting local events and collaborating with nearby farms to bring fresh, seasonal ingredients to the menu. • While we missed Thayer’s, we were so glad to see its staff and some of its food (along with some new additions) return in a unique environment. The burger and soup were just as great as I remember, and we loved seeing art for sale on the walls. Highly recommended!

  • This is an adorable restaurant tucked away in Joliet. We made a reservation the day before and were seated immediately upon arrival. The atmosphere is cute and cozy, almost homie with eclectic decorations and mismatched plates. You could feel the love out into the decorating. I had the fillet with mashed sweet potatoes and asparagus, and it was an absolute delight cooked perfectly. Everything about my meal was amazing. The server was very attentive And answered my questions regarding my food, sensitivities without any issues or attitude, even when she had to go into the back and asked the chef. Overall, I had a very pleasant experience. If I could add anything to the menu, I would love a gluten-free dessert and to have what items are gluten-free indicated on the menu. I also noticed that the online menu is no longer accurate as of this time. I was a bit disappointed to find they no longer had lamb chops, which was planned order in addition to the pricing being off. The pricing difference weren’t so large that it made a huge difference in my budget as a person who needs to plan both for budget and dietary requirements accurate online menus are extremely helpful.

  • In the ever increasing universe of corporate franchises, this delightful restaurant stands as a beacon of the old school, hands-on restaurant of the past, where the owner is the chef, and the atmosphere is cozy and folksy. Ms. Magpie (a soaring personality herself), owns the place and cooks in the kitchen, sometimes sings in the kitchen to the delight of the patrons, and her hands, as my grandmother might’ve put it, are made of gold. The dishes she creates are sheer ecstasy for the food lover. The hand curated quality is evident in everything put on your table. Please hurry there and grab it while you can because places like this are the dinosaurs of the restaurant business. There is local art on the walls, and art classes are held there, along with a Thursday karaoke night that promises to raise the roof. There is a full bar. The staff is friendly, warm, attentive, engaging. Feel free to poke your head behind the curtain that separates the kitchen and say“good job!“ This unpretentious, eclectic restaurant is something you really must experience.

  • I want to give 5 stars, but the parking situation and bathroom situation drastically affected my opinion/view of the entire atmosphere. The restaurant was small and quaint and very cozy. The food and service were excellent. The music and the volume to which it was playing was perfect. Someone was even opening the door for every guest. Definitely above value for the price. The only way to access the restaurant is to park across Ruby Street or to park down the block and walk across a different street. The bathroom was shared in a sports bar and was dirty, small and freezing cold. May want to consider your options if you're disabled. Also it's important to note that the dinner and lunch menus are drastically different and the options are not available all the time.

  • Absolutely delicious. A gem of Joliet. Very much a homemade restaurant. We had the pasta dish, the spicy coconut soup, and the chicken salad sandwich. Everything fantastic. They modified the meal for my 7 year old. They had chalk to play with as well. My son says 5 out of 5!

  • I have been anxiously waiting to try Magpies since it opened and tonight was the night. We had a 5 pm reservation got there about 4:45 thinking we would have a cocktail so we sat at a table and no server ever came to us. Ok strange but the stranger part is that this lovely little bistro is paired with a neighborhood tavern which was very HoT and so loud my head was pounding. The hostess came and asked if we had a reservation at about 5:02 we gave her our name and time of reservation. The doors to the restaurant did not open until 5:12 which would not have been a big deal if the waiting environment was better. We almost walked out but finally the doors opened to expose a charming little restaurant. Our lovely server immediately greeted us and asked if we would like a drink. I am asked about any specialty drinks and was told they have wine from a local winery so I opted for a soda. But then the food started coming. The most delicious buffalo mozzarella hand rolled sticks, potato leek soup that was divine! I had the blackened grouper with asparagus and risotto husband had pasta with meat sauce and a beautiful key lime pie for dessert. The restaurant was a great experience I am giving 5 stars on the food and service alone and I am glad we didn’t leave. for the price point I would have preferred to not hear the tavern noise.

  • Went on a Monday night around 7:15. I had the dining room to myself it was very nice. I loved the vibe, all the original artwork on the walls was super cool. I ordered the Gumbalaya and it was delicious! My server was very friendly and accommodating, I'll definitely be going back!

  • Yesterday two of my favorite co-workers took me here for the first time. Our waitress was very friendly and accommodating. She explained everything on the menu to us. My experience was soo good with my co-workers that I went back and ordered the samething TODAY!. I had the BYO Grilled Chicken Sandwich and Truffle Fries. The grilled chicken is a huge portion and it's seasoned to perfection. The truffle butter fries are just as good. I highly recommend both items. The woman who took my order over the phone was sooo nice. She was very positive upbeat and sweet. Triple bonus she's super funny. I'm always skeptical about going into new places by myself because sometimes the treatment varies but I was welcomed, greeted, and taken care of VERY WELL. I highly recommend this place! The inside is just as amazing. There are soo many beautiful art pieces! Dont walk, Run! You won't be disappointed!
